[Application by mail, required documents, etc.]
Please send the required documents listed in 1 to 3 below (for 2, foreign driver's license, please send clear color copies of both sides of your license and not the original) together with the issuance fee (4,000 yen) to a JAF branch that accepts mail-in applications, by cash-registered mail.

• 1.Application form for issuance of translation of a foreign driver's license.
  Be sure to read the instructions carefully before downloading and printing out the application form for your use.
• 2.Foreign driver's license
  Please prepare clear, color (if possible) copies of both the front and back sides of your driver's license so that the information on your driver's license is legible.
  * Please do not send original driver's licenses or other certificates, as they may be lost.
  * Please not that JAF will not return any documents that are not necessary for translation.
• 3.Issuance fee
  4,000 yen per translation.
  * A fee of 4,000 yen is also charged for re-issuance when the license is lost or for other reason.
  * Additional charges will apply when express delivery or redelivery is requested. For details, please contact the JAF mail-in application branch.

[Required time for issuance]

• Normally, it takes 1-2 weeks. Please contact the JAF branch in advance, for details.
• If you are in a hurry, please consider applying through the Driver's License Translation Application Site.

[Other]

• Please contact the post office for information on how to send money by cash-registered mail.
• Please note that JAF does not accept applications or remittances from overseas, nor send translations overseas.
• JAF does not offer translations for International Driving Permits. The effective period of the Japanese Translation is the same as that of the original license that was translated. However, when the license is renewed or if any changes (such as change of address) are made, a new translation must be acquired. Please contact the JAF branch in advance, for details.
• That translation will be sent to the address indicated on the application form.

  Required only for licenses written in Arabic or Russian, or licenses issued in the Republic of Korea, Kingdom of Thailand, and the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Please refer to 1) - 3) below, as the required documents differ for each country.
  1) A license issued in the Syrian Arab Republic: passport
  2) Licenses issued in the Republic of Korea, Kingdom of Thailand, and Republic of the Union of Myanmar: copy of residence card or copy of certificate of residence in Japan.
  3) Licenses issued in countries other than those in 1) and 2) above with driver's licenses written in Arabic or Russian: copy of residence card or copy of certificate of residence.
